History of Seditio

The history of Seditio began in 2001 when professional programmer Olivier Chapuis from Grenoble, France, developed a content management system (CMS) called Land Down Under (LDU) based on PHP and MySQL technologies. This modern and reliable solution for creating websites quickly gained popularity, especially in gaming communities where LDU was used as an engine for gaming portals. Its simplicity, high page creation speed, flexibility, and strong focus on security set LDU apart from most complex and overloaded Open Source systems of the time. These advantages were appreciated by both developers and users, leading to rapid growth in the community and an increase in the number of sites built on this platform.

In 2006, the company Neocrome, which developed LDU, announced the release of Seditio—a new version of the system that represented a rebranding and significant architectural overhaul of the CMS. The name Seditio was an abbreviation of Land Down Under Second Edition, emphasizing continuity and the scale of changes. Compared to LDU, Seditio offered improved plugin support and enhanced extensibility. However, in 2008, the official developer stopped releasing updates for the product. That same year, part of the Seditio team released a package of improvements for the system, and on February 1, 2009, the first public release of Cotonti—an independent product based on Seditio—was made. This became possible after receiving official permission from Neocrome to publish Cotonti and its inherited Seditio code as open source.

In 2011, the projects Land Down Under and Seditio were officially closed. The final version of Seditio was 150, after which Olivier Chapuis announced the end of support for the system. However, in 2012, he unexpectedly attempted to revive the project by releasing version 160, which included support for HTML and WYSIWYG editors. Unfortunately, due to discovered security issues, Olivier decided to close the project permanently.

Nevertheless, work on Seditio soon resumed. Since 2012, the rights to further develop the system, obtained from Olivier Chapuis, have been held by two Russian programmers: Alexander Tishov (Amro) from Astrakhan and Anton Sazanov (Antony) from Moscow. They previously created and maintained their sites based on LDU/Seditio and continued the project's development, focusing on creating a convenient, fast, and reliable engine for a wide range of users. Additionally, significant contributions to the development of Seditio are made by friends from Turkey who remain loyal to the project and have not switched to Cotonti. Their efforts help maintain and improve the system, making it even more functional and in demand.

Since 2012, versions 171, 172, 173, 175, 177 (beta test), 178, and 179 (current stable version) of the system have been released. Seditio is distributed as open-source software under the BSD license. Changes to the system core are made by the developer community considering client needs and personal projects. The distribution is constantly improved by implementing proven and in-demand functionality tested in real commercial and public projects. Thanks to this, Seditio CMS remains a modern and relevant system for creating websites, retaining its key advantages: simplicity, reliability, and flexibility.

Cotonti, as a branch of Seditio, also continues to develop, offering users an alternative approach to creating sites. Both projects—Seditio and Cotonti—exist in parallel, retaining their unique features and audiences.
